Buffalo County Community Partners leads coalition
KEARNEY – A Kearney-area community coalition has developed a proactive campaign aimed to increase “safe and smart” behavior during Kearney’s largest community event, Cruise Nite.
Scheduled to take place July 16-20, this community event, with a 27-year history, brings tens of thousands of visitors and Kearney residents to downtown Kearney, all focused on watching classic cars.
The coalition is focusing on making Cruise Nite and all its associated activities throughout Kearney enjoyable and safe for everyone. Centered around a theme “Be Safe, Be Smart,” the awareness campaign seeks to bring attention to positive behaviors and activities for the event to encourage good decision-making among festival-goers.
The campaign will start small its first year with the introduction of the theme, a logo, and initial education strategies, said Brad Kernick, chair of the Cruise Nite committee and the Central Nebraska Auto Club. The coalition will continue to build year to year and add activities to influence positive behaviors and encourage a “culture shift” toward a safer Cruise Nite atmosphere. Continue reading

KEARNEY — As the years roll by, Central Nebraska Auto Club battles old age.
“It’s an evolutionary thing in our society, and it’s not unique to car clubs,” said Brad Kernick, president of the Cruise Nite steering committee and member of Central Nebraska Auto Club. “Look at fraternal organizations, service clubs — any of those kinds of things — it’s a constant battle to re-populate your group and keep it vibrant and energized.”
“It’s a controlled environment, and we can allow people to show off their cars in a safe way.”
Brad Kernick, head of Cruise Nite committee
Kernick paused during preparations for Cruise Nite to talk about the history — and evolution — of the club.
“We work hard at that,” he said of the constant efforts to keep Central Nebraska Auto Club relevant and alive. “It’s always something we need to be aware of, that we need to attract new members with new thoughts and new ideas and new energy.” Continue reading

KEARNEY — Saturday evening would have been a perfect night to take a 1966 Mustang GT out for a spin.
That’s what Steve Hosier of Giltner would have done. He’s been coming to Cruise Nite for four years now and is just about finished restoring the car. He just gave it a candy apple red paint job.
Unfortunately, it’s not quite ready for Cruise Nite. But he’ll definitely be back next year.
“There’s something about car people,” Hosier said. “They all got everything in common.”
Cruise Nite chair Brad Kernick said turnouts were at all-time highs for many of the week’s events. Continue reading
